Medical coders and billers translate patient care — diagnoses, procedures and services — into standardized codes (ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS) and turn those codes into clean claims that payers will accept. The role sits at the intersection of clinical documentation, payer rules and revenue flow: coders focus on accurately representing what happened during a visit or stay, while billers assemble and submit claims, follow up on denials and manage accounts receivable.
Work is detail‑heavy and compliance driven. You need working knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy, solid command of coding conventions and payer policies, and familiarity with EHRs and claim submission systems. Employers range from hospitals and physician practices to specialty clinics, billing companies and insurers; remote work is common for experienced coders/billers who can work independently and maintain HIPAA security controls.
What does the day-to-day look like?
Typical daily tasks include reviewing clinical notes and operative reports to select the correct ICD-10 and CPT/HCPCS codes, applying modifiers and documenting coding rationale. On the billing side you’ll create and scrub claims, check insurance eligibility and authorizations, submit claims through clearinghouses, and monitor denials and appeals until payment posts. You’ll also resolve provider queries, support internal audits, and keep documentation organized for compliance reviews.
Workflows vary by setting: hospital/inpatient coders often work with discharge summaries and have a heavier focus on DRG assignment, while outpatient/professional coders concentrate on evaluation-and-management (E/M) coding, procedure codes and time-based services. Billers spend more time interacting with payers, patients, and AR aging reports. Most days require fast, accurate typing, reference to code books/encoders, and use of an EHR and billing software (examples: Epic, Cerner, Athenahealth, 3M encoder, Optum).
How to break in
Start with targeted education: a medical billing and coding certificate (6–12 months) or an associate degree in health information/informatics (2 years) provides the foundational knowledge employers expect. Many community colleges and online programs include practical labs with code books and simulated claims. Complement coursework with focused study of medical terminology, anatomy, ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS and payer rules.
Get certified. Entry and career-advancing credentials are valued by employers: AAPC’s CPC (Certified Professional Coder) is common for outpatient/professional coding; AAPC’s CPB (Certified Professional Biller) covers billing. AHIMA’s CCA (Certified Coding Associate) is an entry credential, while CCS/CCS‑P are common for hospital/inpatient and physician-based coding respectively. Certification improves hireability and pay; study with practice exams and timed coding sessions to simulate test conditions.
Build practical experience: aim for internships, externships or entry roles (medical records clerk, billing clerk, front‑desk registration) to get exposure to EHRs and claims processes. Learn common billing platforms and clearinghouses, practice with code lookup tools and CPT/ICD manuals, and volunteer to help small clinics with claim scrubbing. Join local AAPC/AHIMA chapters, attend workshops, and keep a log of coded charts to show on interviews. Finally, prepare a clean home-office setup (secure internet, dual monitors) and complete employer HIPAA and cybersecurity requirements if you plan to work remotely.
Salary expectations
U.S. salaries vary by region, employer and certification. Approximate ranges: Junior/entry-level coders/billers typically earn about $34,000–$45,000 annually. Mid-level coders with certification and 2–5 years’ experience commonly earn $45,000–$65,000. Senior coders, specialty/inpatient coders, auditors or managers can earn in the $65,000–$95,000+ range. Contract or consultant rates and remote roles can push compensation higher in high-cost areas or for niche expertise — but numbers vary widely, so use them as broad benchmarks.
Job outlook
Demand is steady-to-growing: complexity of coding rules, regulatory scrutiny, payer audits and an aging population all sustain need for skilled coders and billers. Automation and AI tools are reducing time spent on repetitive tasks, but human review, clinical judgment and payer negotiation remain necessary. Expect continued demand for auditors, clinical documentation improvement (CDI) specialists and coders who can handle specialty or inpatient work and who keep up with payer and regulatory changes.

Do I need certification to get a job?

How long does it take to become qualified?
