A financial analyst collects, cleans, and interprets financial and operational data to help organizations make informed budgeting, planning, and investment decisions. Typical outputs include financial models, forecasts, variance analyses, dashboards, and presentations that translate numbers into actionable recommendations for managers, finance teams, and investors.
The role sits at the intersection of accounting, data analysis, and business strategy. Strong Excel skills, a grounding in accounting fundamentals, and the ability to explain assumptions and trade-offs clearly are core. Increasingly, analysts also use SQL, Python/R, and BI tools (Power BI/Tableau) to automate reporting and handle larger datasets.
What does the day-to-day look like?
A typical day mixes recurring tasks and ad-hoc projects. Recurring work often includes updating models and forecasts, running month-end variance and KPI analyses, preparing management reports and slide decks, and supporting budgeting or planning cycles. You’ll reconcile figures to accounting systems, check assumptions, and ensure data integrity.
Ad-hoc work can be scenario modeling for a potential acquisition, pricing analyses, working with sales/operations to understand drivers of revenue and cost, or automating manual Excel processes. You’ll spend time meeting stakeholders to gather requirements and present results, and you’ll often iterate on models after receiving feedback.
How to break in
Start with a relevant degree (finance, accounting, economics, engineering, or math) and focus on building practical technical skills: advanced Excel (pivot tables, XLOOKUP/INDEX-MATCH, array formulas), basic accounting (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow), and core valuation/forecasting techniques (DCF, comps, sensitivity analysis). If you’re switching careers, take online courses that include real modeling exercises and follow them by rebuilding models from public company filings.
Get hands-on experience early. Internships in corporate finance, FP&A rotations, accounting roles, or investment firms give direct exposure. If internships aren’t available, build a portfolio: create 2–3 complete models (a 3-statement model + forecast, a valuation, and a budgeting model) using public company 10-K/10-Qs, and host sanitized samples or screenshots. Volunteer financial planning for a nonprofit, freelance small-business budgeting, or participate in student finance clubs/case competitions to add real-world examples.
Learn complementary tools to stand out: SQL for querying databases, a scripting language (Python/R) for automation and analysis, and a BI tool (Power BI or Tableau) for visualization. Consider professional credentials if they match your target path—CFA can help for investment-focused roles; CPA helps if you want to move toward accounting-heavy positions. Equally important are communication and stakeholder management—practice writing executive summaries and presenting concise recommendations.
Salary expectations
US ranges vary by industry and location. Entry-level/Junior financial analysts typically earn about $60,000–$80,000. Mid-level analysts with 3–6 years’ experience usually range from $80,000–$120,000. Senior analysts, FP&A managers, and specialists in high-cost markets or financial services can earn $120,000–$180,000+ (total compensation in investment banking or hedge funds can be substantially higher). These are approximate ranges and depend on city, sector, and company size.

Demand for financial analysts remains steady across corporations, startups, and financial services because companies always need budgeting, forecasting, and performance monitoring.
